Local Area - Carlisle, Hadrian's Wall, Cumbria

Oakville Cottages are situated just 5 miles from the historic border city of Carlisle in Cumbria - a city with an interesting past leaving a legacy for today's visitors to experience. The city's castle was founded in 1092 by William the Conqueror's son and became one time prison to Mary Queen of Scots. Later it was captured by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the ill fated Jacobite rebellion of 1745. Other places to visit include Carlisle Cathedral and the award winning Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery. Also nearby is the unique World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall stretching from Wallsend-on-Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway, some 73 miles (117km). The Wall was built by the great Emperor Hadrian during his visit to Britain in AD 122. Carlisle offers a great shopping experience with all the national shops and some excellent local independents, so the area really offers something for everyone, from country walks to city attractions.
